Life Vision Board - Picturing the life you want

Everyone I work with describes the importance of their Life Vision board differently. There are however, core themes that emerge. Clients talk about how it creates amazing new opportunities for them and provides direction in achieving their dreams and desires.

Let me share a little story with you. I was working with a client in New York. She completed her Life
Vision board and sent me a photograph of it. I asked her about someone in it who looked like they were working in an enormous garden. She said something spoke to her about that image that she couldn’t quite
explain; she’d tried disregarding it at first, having never had any involvement with growing anything at all! With no idea why, she ended up accepting that somehow this image was significant. Over time and after living with her Life Vision board, she decided she wanted to grow things. But what exactly and how?

I try hard to suspend all judgments, but in all honesty I didn’t have her down as an outdoors type, let alone a gardener and was quietly skeptical. Adamant that she now had a strong desire to grow stuff, living in New York with the hustle and bustle and density of buildings, introducing something green into her everyday life suddenly became very important to her. Nurturing a tomato plant on her apartment windowsill created a chain reaction, with five colleagues taking up the challenge to grow something for the first time ever. Sometime later, she decided to spend her holiday volunteering on an organic farm, as her passion for all things grown was fully unleashed.

Her Life Vision board had uncovered a passion she never knew existed. She is now in a relationship with a man she met on the organic farm who just happens to be a soil expert! When we spoke last she was considering approaching her law firm about pro bono work on anti GM crops legislation. Now I’m not promising you new love and green fingers, but I am promising that creating your own Life Vision board will open the door to new and amazing opportunities!

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?...
As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

The Background

When I was introduced to Life Vision boards, I was less than enthusiastic. I presumed wrongly that using pictures to plan your life was better suited to those who liked hugging trees more than I do.
Eight years and twelve boards of my own later, creating Life Vision boards and using them as my guide in ‘making stuff happen’ in my life (as opposed to aimlessly wishing) is the single most powerful tool I use. Life Vision boards are a significant foundation in making real change.

What is a Life Vision board?

A Life Vision board is simply a visual representation of the things that you want to have, be or do. It’s that simple!

A piece of cardboard with cut-out pictures, drawings and writing stuck onto it. All the items directly relate to what you want in your life. You might have heard about Life Vision boards in the hugely popular book The Secret. It linked Life Vision boards to the law of attraction. Simply put, it states that we attract into our lives anything that we give attention to, regardless of whether it is positive or negative.

Before I was sold on the idea, I needed to ask a few more questions. One was ‘is there any science behind this?’ The psychological science of Life Vision boards is centered on the brain’s information filtering system, known as the reticular activating system (RAS). The pictures you create work as external stimuli to programme your brain and move you towards achieving your heart’s desire. Located at the base of the brain stem, the RAS is a finger-sized control centre responsible for filtering all incoming data. It also prioritises which information is important for our very survival.

Think of your RAS like a radio. A radio has the potential to pick up different stations, but you can only listen to one at a time. You have to tune into a particular frequency to get a good sound and find something that you really want to listen to. Your RAS works in just the same way. If you are in a room full of people and hear your name mentioned, hard as you try, your attention will be focused momentarily in that direction. Your RAS identified your name as important.

Have you ever bought a new car and suddenly see that make and model everywhere? I remember the day I discovered that I was going to be a mum. From the moment I walked out of the doctor’s surgery, all I saw for months was pregnant women and babies!

With literally millions if not trillions of bits of information flowing into our brains, we need the RAS to filter, guide and protect us. The science tells us that the RAS is already hardwired to prioritise information. However, the really interesting bit is that the RAS can’t differentiate between real and imaginary. For example, you know the scary movie you just watched isn’t real, but your brain is still alert and frightened to go to sleep because it’s convinced that zombies might start marching up the street. Yeah right! It is that inability of the RAS to differentiate that makes Life Vision boards such a powerful life tool. As you focus on your Life Vision board daily, your RAS begins to recognise and add to your brain database the pictures and words on your Life Vision board. The RAS will literally attach your focus to things in your environment that match your goals and vision.

At the end of the year I review and calculate just how much my Life Vision board delivered. So far, pretty much everything I took action on happened! I programmed my RAS to watch out for my goals and dreams. So watch out what you wish for!
